Surat Thani (สุราษฎร์ธานี) is a city on the Central Gulf Coast of Southern Thailand. At approximately 125,000 residents, it is the eighth largest city in Thailand. It is also the capital of Surat Thani Province. Surat Thani means "City of Good People", the title given to the city by King Vajiravudh (Rama VI). It is a gateway to the islands of Thailand's Gulf Coast: Koh Samui, Koh Pha Ngan and Koh Tao. They are much-visited destinations, as well as Ang Thong National Marine Park. |

By Train |
Trains leave Bangkok's Hua Lumphong Railway Station 10 times daily from 12 p.m. until 10.50 p.m. The trip takes approximately 12-13 hours. Ask for the train from Bangkok to Phun Phin, the closest station to Surat Thani City, located 13km away. A bus service between the station and the town is available as are tuk tuks and songtaews that service the ferry piers. Air-conditioned busses depart from Bangkok's Southern Bus Terminal to Surat Thani Province everyday. For more information call the southern Bus Terminal tel: 0 2434 5557-8 or visit www.transport.co.th From Surat Thani there are three bus stations from which busses depart: Talaat Kaset 1 has bus service for travel within Surat Thani province; Talaat Kaset 2: has busses and minivans for destinations farther away, including Krabi, Phuket, and Hat Yai; and the New Station is for air-conditioned buses to Bangkok. |

Surat Thani can be most conveniently reached by car from Bangkok by taking Highway No. 4 through Petchaburi and Prachuap Khiri Khan Provinces to Chumphon Province and then taking Highway No. 41 and Highway No. 401 directly to Surat Thani City. |
By Boat |
You can take the ferry from any of the islands nearby, taking about two and a half hours. There is food for purchase on board and movies on some boats as well.
From islands such as Koh Samui, Koh Pha Ngan and Koh Tao, a ferry ride takes between 2 and 9 hours depending on whether you take the fast or slow boat. The slow boat from Koh Tao is overnight and features mattresses for sleeping. The skipper is especially friendly. The Seatran ferry at Nathon, Koh Samui leaves almost every hour until 6pm. |

Koh Nang Yuan (Nang Yuan Island) is a group of three islands northwest of Koh Tao. The pretty little islands are interconnected by a long sandy beach. In Thailand is probably one of world’s most beautiful tropical islands. |
Koh Pha ngan is part of the group of islands that make up the Samui Archipelago; a group of over 40 islands fashioned in granite from age old igneous formations. Koh Phangan is 70kms from the mainland and approximately 12kms away from Koh Samui which acts as the main air link to Koh Phangan. There is an abundance of wildlife from monkeys to birds of paradise and then there is the amazing underwater world that surrounds Koh Pha ngan, the island became internationally famous for, with the globally renowned Full Moon Party and weekly outdoor events in jungle and beachfront venues in Haad Rin. Haad Rin Nok (Sunrise) is the party beach on the sunrise side of the peninsula; it is an extreamely picturesque beach which by day is full of sunworshippers and in the evenings, full of nightlife. Haad Mae Haad is quite possibly one of the most beautiful beaches, Wide sandy beach joined to Ko Maa, a national marine park, by a sand spit. Most of the boat tours stop here and all the diving schools bring their customers here to enjoy diving onto the coral reef lay that lies just offshore. There is an elephant trekking camp on the ring road just above the beach which takes clients through the jungle and onto the view point overlooking Mae Haad bay. Koh Ma is a small island just a few hundred metres offshore from Mae Haad beach. At low tide the two land masses are connected through a sand bar and it is easy to walk acroos to the small island. |
